North Bay Fire was called in to investigate a report of a very significant radiation reading from a bin at the North Bay Landfill over the weekend. Around 9:00pm on Friday, a duty officer from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission reached out to fire officials about the reading. Crews, with help from a member of the hospital’s nuclear medicine department, brought extra radiation measuring equipment and investigated at the scene.
The investigation found gamma radiation was present but at levels that don’t pose a significant danger. Officials say the area has been isolated and the landfill is operating as usual. Members of the Nuclear Safety Commission will be in North Bay today to further investigate the incident.
