New four-way stop approved for North Bay’s core

North Bay City Council approved the installation of a four-way stop at the corner of Main Street West and Cassells Street at Tuesday’s regular Council meeting.

In a report from staff, the measure was recommended after the location was subject to a traffic count and analysis. The four-way stop, with affixed flashing lights, will be introduced in a “few weeks,” according to Coun. Tanya Vrebosch.

Vrebosch says that several factors have led to the decision, including numerous motor vehicle collisions, pedestrian safety concerns, and the imminent increase in traffic volume in the area. In addition to the typical volume of traffic, the new Health Unit building is slated to open this autumn, a new hotel has been operating since July on Oak Street West and several restaurants have, or are slated to, open in the vicinity.

Eighteen collisions at the intersection were reported over the last few years, according to the staff report. Vrebosch pointed out that residents from nearby retirement communities have let it be known that they have had issues crossing at Main West and Cassells.

Major complaints from motorists include poor sightlines around parked vehicles on Main West, as well as the speed that drivers proceed in either direction while travelling on Main West. Vrebosch also clarified that Marina Point residents are having difficulty crossing Main West with a two-way stop in place, and that a four-way stop should help alleviate pedestrian safety problems.
