Youth Rangers helping out with precious green resources

Youth Rangers will join members of North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) and Trees for Nipissing to assist with the management of trees at the Tree Nursery. The Youth Rangers will help nurture the seedlings that will eventually be transplanted to public spaces in the area.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) Youth Rangers will be mentored by NBMCA staff and Trees for Nipissing volunteers Monday about the proper methods for both caring for, and maintaining, seedlings. The Rangers will then weed the grounds at the Starter Nursery, located at 653 Second Ave. E.

“It’s a great opportunity to foster environmental stewardship within these energetic and enthusiastic youth in exchange for their much-valued assistance in maintaining the starter nursery,” said Peggy Walsh Craig, NBMCA’s Stewardship Administrator.  “In the end, the people of North Bay share the benefit when these seedlings grow and eventually get planted throughout the City.”

The seedlings from the Starter Nursery, a coordinated effort by the NBMCA and Trees for Nipissing, as well as the Hammond Street nursery will be moved to city parks and other urban areas. According to the participants, the goal is to “make North Bay a more park-like city.”
