Bedlam behind bars

First responders were called to the North Bay Jail Saturday evening after a riot took place on the upper floor of the building. Broken windows were visible from Trout Lake Road, Sunday, some 12 hours after the violence was quelled by corrections officers.

One correctional officer was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and released. A sergeant on-duty at the jail Sunday confirmed that the officer “would be fine.”

The uprising began shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday evening and lasted more than eight hours until order was restored in the early hours of Sunday morning.

While officials at the jail remain tight-lipped about the situation, labour leaders have already made pleas to improve mental health services and improve crumbling infrastructure at the facility.
