No charges in cat-in-can caper

Updating a previous story, it seems that no criminal charges will be filed against those responsible for breaking a pane of glass at the Leather Trend on Main Street East, Tuesday.

Concerned citizens broke glass in the entranceway to free a cat from a can that the animal had gotten its head stuck in. Witnesses at the scene said that both the Humane Society and North Bay Police Services had been alerted to the cats locked inside the closed business.

The former operator of the Leather Trend is currently incarcerated and social media posts from the man’s daughter claim that the incident was overblown and that she had been caring for the animals. Residents and business owners in the shop’s area had been feeding the cats by prying the front door upward and sliding food underneath.

According to a police release on the matter, “The damage to the window could have been avoided had the police been contacted before trying to remove the can from the cat[…]The North Bay Police Service and the Humane Society are on longer involved with this incident.”
