$35,000 raised for specialized mental health care

The Canadian Mental Health Association estimates 10 to 20 per cent of Canadian children are affected by mental illness. It can be treated effectively and yet, only 1 in 5 children and adolescents that need this care receive it. NBRHC serves a population of more than 42,000 children from birth to age 18 in northeastern Ontario.

One of the highlights of the event was a speech by Maureen Brazeau who shared her family’s experiences with mental illness.

“When a parent or a patient has the courage to share their personal story, we have the opportunity to bring awareness and break down the stigma of mental illness, and at the same time, highlight how community support helps advance care,” said Tammy Morison, President & CEO of the NBRHC Foundation.

Wednesday, golfers and sponsors at the Osprey Links Charity Golf Gala raised $35,000 for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit (CAMHU) at the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC).

During the past five years the tournament, presented by Bell Let’s Talk, has raised $174,000 to ensure that youth have access to specialized mental health services, close to home.

Former Premier of Ontario Mike Harris and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli reflected on the legacy of their friend, the late Peter Minogue, former president of Osprey Links Golf Course.

“Peter approached his golf game like he did his life, with enthusiasm and gusto. Of his many endearing qualities, he was a fierce competitor, but was always fair and honest and wished his opponent good will. Win or lose or draw, he looked forward to meeting again in another match!” said Harris.

“We know he’d feel content and proud that our communities are continuing to benefit through the impact of his generosity,” added Fedeli.
