Online dating scam bilks local woman of $32,000

North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is reminding the public to never give out personal banking information.

Two members of the NBPS travelled to Edmonton, Alta., Tuesday to arrest and charge two men wanted in conjunction with an online dating scam that cost a local woman approximately $32,000.

A 25-year-old Edmonton man and a 26-year-old man, also from Edmonton have both been charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Police say that a North Bay woman began communicating with a male on a dating website. After a friendship developed, the man asked for the woman’s assistance with money transfers. The man claimed that he was out of the country, say NBPS.

Both males were held for a bail hearing, scheduled for Wednesday.
