Firefighters use expertise with a hose to ‘grow a row’ for a good cause

Despite a late start to the growing season and challenging conditions throughout the summer, firefighters from Station 1 on Princess Street West managed to harvest a bounty of nutritious vegetables to donate to the Gathering Place.

This year, the firefighters grew spinach, kale, and green and red lettuce, a variety of tomatoes, as well as a selection of peppers, and carrots.

A member of the North Bay Professional Firefighters says that the Grow a Row program is currently only operating at Station 1 due to its proximity to the Gathering Place, but would welcome a competition with the other fire stations.

Firefighters are encouraging gardeners to share their crops with those in need and remind shoppers to (if you can) donate at least one item for the North Bay Food Bank every time you shop.
