Canadore president hopeful strike can be averted

George Burton is eager to see 24 Ontario colleges and their faculties get back to the bargaining table this week.

The Canadore College president and CEO is hopeful that students may continue on with their studies without delay.

Last week, OPSEU, the union representing the faculties, received a strike mandate from its members. Negotiations are hinging on fair treatment of faculty on contracts. Union representatives say that contract workers are paid far less than full-time faculty.

Burton calls the strike mandate part of the negotiating process, adding that collective bargaining will continue in good faith. The Canadore president adds that, as has happened in the past, negotiations could continue past the September 30 date when the contract expires, if there is movement from both sides.
