Near North board reacts to EQAO results

Following the release of the Education Quality and Accountability Office results, the Near North District School Board says it will dig deeper into the findings.   Education director Jackie Young says the results from the Education Quality Accountability Office provide useful data the board can use.           Young says the board will explore the data in its entirety to determine how to use it when teaching its students.  Across the system, the board’s Grades 3 and 6 students were below the provincial standard in reading, writing and mathematics.  In the math department, the Grade 6 students were 16 points below the provincial average while the Grade 3 group was 15 points below the average.  Grade 9 academic math students also fell below the provincial average.  This group registered a 75 percent standing however that’s eight points below the provincial average of 83 percent.   The one bright spot was the applied math student results which exceeded the provincial average.  In this case it was a 48 percent showing for the local students compared to the province-wide average of 44 percent.  The Near North board will address the EQAO high school math results at the October 2nd Professional Development day with educators.   In a statement, it says the plan is to continue to improve math results by implementing the province’s Renewed Mathematics Strategy.   At the elementary levels educators will continue their learning as it relates to the math strategy.
