The parents of Sofia Glass admit they have been overwhelmed at times with their daughter’s condition and the financial realities that go with it.
The North Bay Police Association presented the parents of Sofia a cheque for $4,000 on Monday. Sofia will benefit from the charitable work of the association, who Cst. Roger Drolet says saw a surge in support when members learned of Sofia`s story.
Jordan Lepkan is the mother of three-and-a-half-year-old Sofia, who has Rett’s Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that is nearly exclusive to girls. Lepkan says the condition leaves her daughter without the use of her hands.
Lepkan says that while no parent chooses this type of life-altering condition for their child, she and Sofia’s father, Corey, have chosen to “embrace it and give her the best life possible.”
The funding to cover all of Sofia’s needs to live is not readily available, so the police association is proud to help out, says Cst. Roger Drolet. Funds from the annual golf tournament have been donated to the family to aid with expenses.
Lepkan, grateful for the support of the police association, says that the money will go toward defraying the cost of the device that Sofia uses to communicate. The mother of two also says that they will purchase a stroller that attaches to a bicycle so Sofia can accompany the family on fun excursions. Lepkan says that she does not want to leave Sofia at home with a worker while the rest of the family is out together.
