Demerit points from seatbelt infractions will stay on driving record for two years

The OPP is conducting a Fall Seatbelt Campaign in conjunction with the MTO until October 6.

Expect seatbelt spot checks by the OPP during the campaign.

Seatbelt enforcement and education is a high priority for the OPP. The campaigns are conducted to raise awareness of the effectiveness of seatbelt use in saving lives in the event of a collision.

In 2016, on OPP-patrolled roads, 45 people who were not wearing seatbelts died in collisions.

Drivers face two demerit points and fines totalling $240 for seatbelt infractions. The OPP reminds drivers that it takes two years from the date of the offence for demerit points to be removed from a driving record.

The OPP reminds drivers and passengers that a properly worn seatbelt greatly increases your chances of surviving a motor vehicle collision.
