North Bay’s newest four-way stop will be in effect Thursday, says Councillor Tanya Vrebosch.
According to the Chair of Engineering, Public Works and Environmental Services, “We’re ready to go,” with the new four-way stop installation at the intersection of Main Street West and Cassells Street. Vrebosch adds that a public service announcement will be issued noting the change.
In August, City Council approved the measure after hearing a report detailing numerous collisions at the intersection involving both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Vrebosch says that the City has been notified that pedestrians, many of them elderly, were having difficulty crossing under the former two-way stop arrangement.
Other factors in the decision, according to the council discussion, are the recent opening of the Homewood Suites on Oak Street West and the imminent transfer of personnel and services to the new North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit building just down the block. The change in traffic volume that will result in this area is expected to be significant.
A Tim Hortons outlet is also expected to open in the new hotel’s parking lot, potentially transforming what is currently a quiet two-lane street into a major traffic area during peak hours.
