There’s no place like home for local Lakers stars

The Nipissing University women’s hockey team rebounded from a tough outing Friday night with a dominating 5-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gardens.

Five different goals scorers found the back of the net and goalie Danika Ranger earned her first win and shutout in the OUA. The native of Astorville, Ont made 24 saves to blank the Lancers after the Lakers fell 6-3 to Western, Friday.

The Lakers scored in each period, with Jade Gauthier (of Callander, Ont.) scoring her team-leading third goal of the season, the eventual game-winner, in the first period.

She roofed a perfect shot over the blocker of the Lancers goalie to make it 1-0, assisted by linemates Robyn Degagne and Maria Dominico.

In the second, Nipissing increased their lead to 3-0 thanks to a rebound goal by Ava Keis, who tapped home a loose puck, and a deflection by Bronwyn Bolduc that found the back of the net.

In the third period, Nipissing made sure the result was never in doubt, adding two more goals. Fifth-year transfer and North Bay product Degagne picked up her first goal in a Lakers uniform and Dominico, another native of North Bay, scored her second in as many games.

The Lakers, now 1-1-0, will hit the road for a five-game stretch, beginning next weekend in Sudbury against Laurentian.
