Right now 1.5 billion plastic coffee pods end up in Ontario landfills a year and they take hundreds of years to breakdown. However the MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka is trying to change that. Norm Miller says a 100 percent compostable coffee pod has been developed and he wants it to become an industry standard. Miller says the pod can breakdown in as little as five weeks. It was developed by a collaborative effort by Club Coffee in Toronto and the University of Guelph. Miller prefers composting the pods instead of having them recycled because many municipalities avoid recycling the pods. He says it’s all due to possible contamination of consumers trying to compost non-compostable pods. Miller points out that Loblaws and McDonalds already use the newly developed compostable pod which is know as PurPod100. Miller has introduced a Private Member’s Bill on compostable pods and his proposed legislation will be debated November 23rd.
