Fedeli expects positive things from government’s wood program

A program by the Ontario Liberals to help build more wood-frame buildings is getting support from Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli.   The Tory MPP believes homebuilders and commercial builders will welcome the program, especially in Southern Ontario.  He says because land in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is so valuable, builders need to find ways of making housing more affordable the higher they rise.  Fedeli says that’s where wood comes in and why his recent amendment to his Private Member’s Bill to increase the height of wood-frame buildings to 14 storeys is winning support.

Fedeli also notes that wood is more efficient at keeping heat in.  In addition to being more efficient, the Tory MPP says wood is also good for the environment.  He says when a tree dies in the forest, it releases carbon.   However that’s not the case when wood is used in construction.  Fedeli says the wood sequesters the carbon by keeping it trapped internally so it’s not released as emissions.  The Tory finance critic says the wood timber program should also spell good news for Northern Ontario Fedeli because it would be the main supplier for the wood material.  He believes that will help turn around some negative fortunes in the past when the north lost a great number of its mills.
