Residents safely evacuate early morning blaze

All three North Bay Fire and Emergency Services stations were called to respond to a structure fire at 585 Kehoe early Thursday morning.

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders says that upon arrival at the scene at 1:30 am, fire department personnel were faced with a fire in the rear of the duplex so intense that it had already blown out a bedroom window.   Fire crews initiated an interior fire attack which contained the fire damage to that one bedroom although there was still extensive smoke damage to the rest of the home.

Smoke alarms alerted residents to the danger and all residents were able to self-evacuate. There were no injuries.   Fire Prevention personnel are investigating to determine the cause.

North Bay Fire would like to offer the following electrical fire safety warnings that should not be ignored:

  • Frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping breakers
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Sparks from an outlet
  • Discoloured or warm wall outlets
  • Tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance
  • Burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance

Saunders also reminds the public to have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician.
