Miller pursues compostable single-use coffee pods with petition

Parry Sound – Muskoka MPP Norm Miller is taking the next step to ensure Ontario moves to a compostable coffee pod system.  The Tory MPP has now launched a petition to support his Reducing Waste One Pod at a Time Act.  Miller is trying to end the use of plastic single-use coffee pods.  Each year millions of the plastic pods end up in landfills across the province and he says the problem with this is they take many years to decompose.  Across Canada a staggering 1.5 billion of these pods are thrown out.

Miller says since first introducing his Private Member’s Bill on November 1st of this year, he’s received positive response for the initiative.  His goal is to continue to push for the change with a petition people can either sign in paper form or online.  His Bill will be debated on November 23rd and that’s when he will talk about the online petition numbers he’s collected and also introduce the paper petitions in the Legislature.

Miller says although recycling the plastic pods is an option, it’s not one consumers will opt for because that means they need to take the pods apart and clean them before putting them in their recycling box.  He believes the compostable pod is the best option and adds companies like Loblaws and McDonalds already use the newly developed pod which is known as PurPod100.    To access the petition Click here
