The College Employer Council says it can’t agree to a union demand to give striking employees a $5,000 signing bonus. The council says agreeing to that demand would cost $60-million. Meanwhile the Ontario Public Service Employees Union wants the government to disband the college council. OPSEU says the council is beyond the reach of freedom-of-information and salary disclosure laws even though taxpayers pay for it. It adds the council is a shadowy organization that is accountable to no one and only exists to enrich its directors. The Liberal government is expected to introduce back-to-work legislation today and may sit through the weekend in an effort to pass it. The Progressive Conservative party supports the proposed legislation but not the NDP.
