Is a forecast for a ‘normal winter’ a good or bad thing?

What could be more normal about a Canadian winter than the usual cold and the typical amount of snow?

While winters in the recent past have been anything but “normal,” just determining what normal is these days is a challenge, even for meteorologists.

The Weather Network is calling for a “classic Canadian winter,” across Ontario with an “active storm track bringing above average snowfall across central and southern regions.” Experts say that the GTA could be in for its “snowiest winter in a decade.”

Across the country, the winter forecast is a mixed bag. “Due to a weak to moderate La Niña, this winter is shaping up to have two distinct personalities— while Canadians should brace themselves for periods of high-impact weather and an impressive amount of snowfall, the good news is we should get a mid-winter break,” explained Chris Scott, Chief Meteorologist at The Weather Network. “As a whole, Canadians should expect a wild ride from start to finish. It’s safe to say we’ll all be participating in winter this year.”

Locally, the forecast is kind of boring and that likely suits plenty of people just fine. Northern and northeastern Ontario are expected to experience near normal temperatures for the season, as well as near normal levels of precipitation.
