Near North board chair wants one school board idea discussed in June election

The chair of the Near North District School Board wants the one school board for all issue raised in the June election.   Dave Thompson says the three main political parties avoid talking about this.  But he says at the very least, the issue is on the radar of public high school teachers.  “The OSSTF supports one school board across the province,” Thompson said.  “They have a motion on this and it will be interesting to see if they talk about it more between now and the election.”

Thompson says the Near North board has had a motion on its books for years calling for one school board province-wide.  He says the challenge will be encouraging the main three political parties to talk about it.  Thompson says only the Green Party and the Northern Ontario Party have talked up education issues.

In the case of the NOP, Thompson says it wants a referendum held in the next election where the people should decide the type of school board system that should be in place.  He says education as a whole was barely touched up on in the last election even though it’s the second largest budget item behind health.  The board chairman adds Ontario’s education system is 100 years old and it’s time for a review.
