It’s not your imagination, snow depth above normal

If it seems as though North Bay has experienced more snow at this point than in recent memory, well, it has.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) has released its snow survey readings up to December 15, showing that 14 cm of snow has fallen and accumulated since the first of the month.

As of December 15th, the current average snow depth reading taken at the North Bay Golf and Country Club showed 23.3 cm, 62 per cent higher than normal. The water equivalence of that reading is 4.4 cm or 67 per cent higher than normal. The highest recorded snow depth for December 15th since 2012 is 12.6 cm in 2013.

The NBMCA’s water resources specialist, Joel Harrison, says that conditions are similar this year to those found in 2016. The Chippewa Creek watershed has a current reading of 23.3 cm of snow, but if melted would only produce approximately 4 cm of water. Last year, the snow depth at this point was 20.5 cm.

Snow depth at the Corbeil Conservation Area is slightly above normal, while readings in Chisholm return slightly below normal snow depth readings.
