Area gas tax funding down

North Bay will receive approximately $15,000 less in gas tax funding in 2017-18.

The MTO recently announced $357 million in funding for transit systems, spread across 105 municipalities. Transit ridership is a large variable in a formula that determines a municipality’s share of the money. North Bay’s transit ridership has declined slightly, meaning less funding.

North Bay will see $884,795 in funding for 2017-18, as opposed to $869,051 for 2016-17. The funding comes from a gas tax of 2 cents per litre. The tax is slated to rise in 2019 to 2.5 cents per litre, then 3 cents in 2020, and in 2021, 4 cents.

For 2017-18, Timmins will receive $613,986, Sudbury $2.64 million, and Sault Ste. Marie $1.14 million.
