North Bay Mayor says city was not approached to host Noront smelter

Contrary to a letter to the editor in Tuesday’s Nugget, North Bay was not on a short list to host the Noront smelter.  Mayor Al McDonald says Noront did not approach him nor did it talk to economic development staff at City Hall.  The letter, from Neal McNamara, states North Bay is on a short list of five potential cities to host the smelter.   In fact four cities have been approached over the smelter and they are Sudbury, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay.  McDonald says North Bay will continue to explore how the spin-off effects from the Ring of Fire can benefit the community.

McDonald says North Bay is not geographically situated to host a smelter because it doesn’t have the readily available land from an environmental perspective.  With two surrounding lakes, (Nipissing and Trout) and the environmental concerns this would raise, the Mayor says it would take years to have a smelter approved if North Bay was on the consideration list.
