Anti-casino lobbying continues

A public planning meeting called Monday to address a rezoning application attracted many anti-casino advocates to North Bay’s council chambers.

Led by frequent anti-casino speaker Janet Zimbalatti, a small group reiterated their opposition to a casino in North Bay but also voiced concerns with the specific application before Council.

Jesse Shortt, representing Pinewood Park Drive Inc., is applying for a rezoning of the south-end property to make the land eligible for both a new arena and a casino build.

Zimbalatti wondered how the land in question would receive the services it seeks. City services currently extend only as far as Decaire Road. She also pointed out that the Pinewood Park Drive property is beyond the preferred zone laid out by Gateway Casinos.

Councillor Chris Mayne stated during the meeting that any services that the land received would be financed by the private company, not the taxpayer.
