Funding approved for new public elementary school

The provincial government has come through with the financial backing for a new elementary school in North Bay.

The Near North District School Board is calling the investment “significant capital funding,” that follows recommendations made in the student accommodation review process.

The new school will be located on the current W.J. Fricker Public School site on Norman Avenue and will open in September 2020. The new school will be renamed and rebranded and will instruct students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6.

E.T. Carmichael and E.W. Norman public schools will close and students from those schools will attend the new school. Extended French Grade 5 and Grade 6 students from W.J. Fricker will also attend.

Child care facilities will be included in the construction and approval has been gained for one infant, one toddler, and two pre-school rooms. A new EarlyON Child and Family Centre is included in the plans. These entities will work in concert with the Nipissing DSSAB and YMCA Northeastern Ontario, a third-party licensee.

W.J. Fricker Public School will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year. In September 2019, Grade 5 and 6 students from W.J. Fricker will be accommodated at E.W. Norman while the new school is being constructed and the Grade 7 and 8 students from W.J. Fricker will attend the Chippewa site.
