Gateway has 2020 vision for casino

Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited has made an offer to buy land across from the North Bay Regional Health Centre, according to various reports.

The property is the proponent’s preferred site on which to build a casino by 2020. The land once housed Nordfibre and is currently owned by North Bay’s Orsi family. It sits off Eloy Road near Highway 17 to the west of North Bay’s core.

Gateway is optimistic about the site due to its proximity to a major highway, as well as the ample space available for parking.

The 2020 target will depend on how quickly the sale goes through and construction variables such as weather. Building the casino could take up to two years.

The casino has met opposition from local groups, as was seen at a recent special committee meeting at which a developer in the south end of the city made an application to have a property on Pinewood Park Drive rezoned for a casino. It is the third such parcel of land to be considered for rezoning for purposes of housing a casino. News that Gateway has made the offer for west end land will make the applications unnecessary if this newest sale goes through.
