The vote is four to three for local PD

Councillor Mark King left North Bay City Hall last night calling the vote against OPP costing a “wall of bureaucracy.”

After King’s original motion to have the CAO seek a quote on the cost of having the OPP take over North Bay’s policing ended deadlocked 3-3, he filed a motion for reconsideration. This time, Councillor Mac Bain was present, giving King hope that Bain might cast the vote to break the tie in favour of the costing.

But, Bain had other ideas. Once a proponent of OPP costing, Bain says he made a commitment to Chief Shawn Devine that he would not support a motion such as King’s for the remainder of this Council term. Bain says his past problems with North Bay Police Service were mostly on the administrative side of things, rather than the value to the community of the policing.

King had plans to introduce the issue as a plebiscite in the fall election but says that may be impossible to do in time. He did get the last word once the chambers had emptied following Tuesday’s meeting asking rhetorically, “It’s a costing to give the taxpayers options. Why wouldn’t we do that? It’s beyond comprehension.”
