King says time is not on the side of roads crews

The puddles will freeze and roads will deteriorate once again, and yes, there will be more snow.

Councillor Mark King says he has received numerous emails, more than ever before, about the condition of the roads. King says an overtime clause in the last collectively bargained agreement has the City sending plows out too late to be effective.

King says it may take a motion at City Council to effect change because the current system is broken. He says he has seen graders sitting in traffic on the bypass trying to clear snow at 9:00am. He says he has also brought what he calls “dangerous” conditions to the attention of City staff concerning the base of the hill on Airport Road.

He says this is by no means is this a knock against the hard-working operators of the snowplows and sanders. King believes the crews are being sent out far too late to possibly get the streets cleared by morning when large snow events occur. With the overtime premiums due to the workers prior to 3:00am, the City has simply stopped sending them out that early except when deemed absolutely necessary.
