ATV illegally parked on lake

Two incidents, including one in which an ATV has apparently been abandoned partially sunk, have the OPP cautioning about deteriorating ice conditions.

The North Bay Detachment of the OPP warns the public that, with the warmer temperatures, ice conditions may not be safe.

Saturday, between Lighthouse Road and Smith Island, a passenger vehicle went through the ice approximately 200 metres from shore. No injuries were reported.

Sunday, officers received a call about an ATV partially sunk between Smith Island and Grand Trunk Island. The ATV appears to have been abandoned. North Bay OPP is looking for the owner of the ATV and asks that they please call the North Bay OPP Detachment at 705-495-3878.

The OPP reminds the public that the weight-bearing properties of ice can be affected by many factors including thickness, currents, the age of the ice, pressure cracks, snow cover and weather. Ice conditions can change dramatically from lake-to-lake, from bay-to-bay and from day-to-day.

Police say anyone considering venturing out on ice-covered bodies of water for recreational activities should do so with an experienced, safety-conscious guide who is familiar with local conditions and currents.
