Mothers’ backs to get relief thanks to Accessibility Committee

As the children’s game goes, avoiding the crack makes it easier on mother’s back and soon, there could be fewer cracks in North Bay’s sidewalks.

The City of North Bay’s Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC) has submitted its annual report to Council.

The highlights of the report include how to deal with fracture cracks in sidewalks and snow removal recommendations.

Regarding fracture cracks, MAAC met with both the Engineering Department and Public Works. This year, Engineering has agreed to try a pilot project on pouring concrete for the sidewalks which would limit the number of fracture cracks in the sidewalk.

The committee reports an overall improvement in snow removal in 2017 but expresses on-going concerns with the piling of snow in accessible parking areas. Other concerns include the snow ridges created by the sidewalk plow and the lack of sand on ice that can lead to hazardous conditions.

These concerns have been brought to the attention of the Public Works department and the MAAC reports it will continue to look for ways to improve this process and stay in contact with City Staff to provide feedback.
