There was a time that when classes and exams ended at colleges at spring time, the school was empty of students until September.
However times have changed and the addition of programs that attract students over the summer months can sometimes provide an economic injection into a community.
Canadore College is living proof of this.
Shawn Chorney, the schools’ Vice President of Enrolment, Management, Indigenous and Student Affairs crunched some numbers on the impact students have for the community when they’re enrolled in summer-timed programs.
Chorney says Canadore will see about 350 full-time students this summer and that figure includes four programs the school begins in May.
“This snippet of summer activity adds about $5 million to the local economy” Chorney told Moose News.
“The students are here, some are also working and spending money. And because we have several hundred exchange students, their families come for visits.”
Chorney says the economic impact the college summer students have on North Bay can’t be taken for granted.”
