Canadore to study how First Nations students affected by their culture

Canadore College has a chance to study how Indigenous culture affects the health of First Nation students.

Patty Chabert, who is the school’s Indigenous and Business Relations Manager, says doing this helps create more meaningful connections with the students.

To this end, Chabert says the college is open to different types of programming to create stronger connections.

‘So if they say they want more land-based activities and more opportunities to connect to local communities, elders and knowledge keepers, then we can respond to this,” said Chabert.

Chabert says considering about one third of the student population at Canadore is Indigenous, there will be many students to draw from.

The one year study begins next month.

It was made possible thanks to a $149,858 grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Chabert says following the study, Canadore can share its findings with other groups.
