Lineup set for Armed Forces Day in North Bay June 13th

The latest edition of Armed Forces Day in North Bay will mark a special occasion.

This is the 60th anniversary of NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) the Canadian and American organization that gives  warning of an attack on North American soil.

Armed Forces Day is always filled with numerous static displays and 22 Wing base commander Colonel Mark Roberts says there’s an addition this year because of the NORAD anniversary.

The CF-18 fighter jet demo will have a painting on its side signifying 60 years of a tremendous partnership between Canada and the United States.

“This is the longest standing partnership between two nations and we have the longest undefended border,” said Roberts.

Roberts also says the day includes the CF-18 Demonstration Team and a show put on by the Canada’s military parachute team, the SkyHawks.

Armed Forces Day is broken into two parts.

Beginning at 10:30am June 13th, students from all the school boards will be taken to the waterfront to see the skydiving show, demonstrations by the CF-18 team, walking through the numerous military static displays and get selfies and autographs from the many personnel.

The 22 Wing Band will also perform.

Then in the evening, the personnel repeat their performances for the general community.

Roberts is thankful that the City and honourary colonels put on Armed Forces Day as a way to thank the men and women at 22 Wing.

“It means a great deal to us,” he said.

“Our military can go down with their families and enjoy the day alongside the community members.   It’s not meant to be a working day.  We’re really down there enjoying the celebration and thanking the community for putting on a day like this for us.”

Roberts says aside from the 22 Wing personnel securing the military equipment and participation from the various teams like the Skyhawks, the City and honourary colonels are the driving force behind the day.

Mayor Al McDonald says Armed Forces Day gives locals a chance to take in some sights and sounds and to honour the people who make Canada the best country in the world.
