A band-aid will not fix mental health and addictions crisis, says DNSSAB

The vulnerable will continue to experience shorter life expectancy.

This from reports from the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) stating that the Ministry of Health and Northeast Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN) must help to address the shortcomings with healthcare in the area.

Both the CAO and the Chair of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board are pleading for help to deal with what they have termed a local crisis when it comes to mental health and addictions. Chair Mark King and CAO Joseph Bradbury say that more than a band-aid is required to fix the crisis, adding that they have seen no real effort to help from neither the Ministry of Health nor the NE LHIN.

Reports show that that EMS land ambulance calls for the most critical calls have risen by 20 per cent over the last four years, mostly due to mental health and addictions situations.

DNSSAB says it has asked the provincial government and LHIN to conduct and lead a transparent, independent third-party review of the mental health and addictions needs for the Nipissing District but has not yet received a response.
