Feds fail to see big picture for rail service says NDP MP

The federal New Democrat for Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing says the Harper Tories can help shape the future of Algoma Central Railway. Carol Hughes says instead of cutting ACR’s passenger rail subsidy the feds should be sitting with stakeholders to help cement the service. Algoma Central Railway provides passenger service between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst and received a federal subsidy to offset ridership losses. Hughes says losing the service means lost tourism dollars for the north. Hughes says the irony is a few years ago the federal government had ACR’s rail cars refurbished and now it’s removing the subsidy.
