City Councillor says names of businesses who receive incentives should be made public

A clause in the application for the Downtown Community Improvement Plan has caught the eye of Councillor Mike Anthony.

It is a loophole in the CIP that saw Anthony move to have the same clause added to the two other plans. He could not find a seconder.

The idea that Anthony has spoken about at the last two meetings of Council is that good news stories should be able to be shared by the municipality when businesses prosper thanks in part to taxpayer funding.

He finds issue with taxpayer money aiding businesses with grants without attribution or accountability.

The consensus seems to be that the issue will be addressed during a review of the plans but Anthony still pushed for it to be acknowledged at Tuesday’s meeting.
