Canada Road Safety Week results in 175 speeding charges

Canada Road Safety Week has passed but the OPP cautions drivers to keep safety in mind while enjoying Ontario’s roadways, waterways and trails.

The campaign focused on the high-risk behaviours known as the “Big Four” which include impaired, aggressive and inattentive driving, as well as the lack of seatbelt use. Officers were also looking for Liquor Licence Act (LLA) offences.

Numerous vehicle and vessel stops conducted by officers, resulted in the following Provincial Offence Notices being issued in the North Bay detachment area:

  • 2 warn range suspensions
  • 175 charges for speeding
  • 3 charges of street racing
  • 3 seatbelt charges
  • 2 distracted driving charges
  • 12 LLA charges

Most of the LLA charges stemmed from vessel and vehicle stops where occupants were charged with having liquor in open container in other than licenced premises residence or private place contrary to section 31(2) of the LLA.

Staff Sergeant Chris Summersby, Detachment Commander of the North Bay OPP, would like to remind motorists, “The OPP remains committed to enforcing impaired driving laws and liquor offences and educating road users about the dangers posed by motorists who drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Consuming alcohol and/or drugs while driving any vehicle, ATV, or boat is also an offence. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, stay overnight or stay home.”
