City Hall opens its (new) doors

The necessary work has been completed at the main entrance of North Bay City Hall after several delays and extra costs added to the project.

The main entrance, including several accessibility enhancements, has been open to the public since Tuesday.

Facilities Manager David Jackowski submitted a report to Council in February outlining the need for $99,490.44 (plus HST) for structural repairs to the suspended slab at the main entrance of City Hall, plus the electrical realignment necessary to complete the work. City Councillors approved the recommendation at the February 27 regular meeting.

The funds are in addition to the $134,900 originally approved last August for Pronor Construction Ltd. to renovate the entrance. Pronor secured the original contract through a public tender process.

According to the report, major structural deficiencies of the suspended slab at the entrance had been uncovered during the demolition phase of the project.

Degradation occurred due to meltwater with high concentrations of salt infiltrating the suspended slab. The new design will include a waterproof membrane which will prevent meltwater from doing damage, reads the report.

Because the necessary work had to be performed directly above the main electrical room servicing City Hall, the equipment had to be protected during the repair work and required interruptions in power. This work was to be performed outside regular business hours but the main entrance to City Hall was inoperable for much of the winter until this week.
