Local Gift of Life group sets a lofty goal for North Bay

The target is 95 per cent.

The local Gift of Life group, including Adele Orr, who will eventually need a double lung transplant due to her cystic fibrosis says the wait times for transplants are lengthy. She has a friend who has gone two full years on the waiting list while being unable to work or go to school, with frequent hospital visits, all the while living away from her family.

The local Gift of Life group has also challenged Sudbury and are urging local residents to help stay ahead of the Nickel City. Currently, North Bay’s registration rate of 56 per cent is tops among 170 Ontario communities. Sudbury sits at 54 per cent.

Organ donation is one of the kindest and most selfless acts, says Orr. She says one organ donor can save the lives of eight people and aid 70 more through tissue donation.

Asked how she encourages others to become donors, a task that he says takes no more than two minutes at beadonor.ca, she replies “I ask them if they needed it, would they take it?”
