Local inventor Hurtubise died in Sunday collision with tanker

An update on Sunday’s fatal collision and tanker fire on Highway 17 west of North Bay.

The driver of the westbound vehicle who was located deceased in the burnt vehicle has been identified as Troy Hurtubise, 54, of North Bay. His identity has been confirmed by the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

The driver of the eastbound tractor-trailer was able to escape the fire and suffered minor injuries.

Members of the North Bay Detachment of the OPP along with North Bay Fire and Emergency Services and the North Bay Ambulance Service responded to the fatal motor vehicle collision Sunday at 1:08pm. The collision occurred on Highway 17, west of North Bay as a motor vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer causing both vehicles to catch fire.

The OPP’s Technical Traffic Collision Investigators and the Office of the Chief Coroner- Ontario Forensic Pathology Service assisted with the investigation.

Highway 17 was closed for eight hours during the investigation.
