Displaced Keewaydin campers temporarily calling North Bay ‘home’

Mayor Al McDonald said earlier this week that the City of North Bay would be prepared to help victims displaced by the forest fires near Temagami and it did not take long for a plea for help to come.

Approximately 100 campers from Keewaydin Canoe Camp located in Temagami and ranging in age from 10 to 13 have been welcomed by the City of North Bay.

Mayor Al McDonald was contacted by representatives of the camp requesting assistance. North Bay’s Emergency Management Team quickly coordinated the logistics for accommodations and meals.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley says several community partners and agencies are also involved in the effort, such as the Canadian Red Cross, Nipissing University, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, and the Gathering Place.

All campers have arrived in the city and officials say the team is working on meeting their needs.

McDonald says, “The City has an Emergency Management Plan in place for circumstances just like this. We are pleased to offer our assistance and to help ensure the safety of the young campers as they make their way back home.”
