Crews successfully battle the fire and the heat

According to Deputy Chief Greg Saunders, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services personnel faced a very significant fire located in the basement of a home late last evening that firefighters were able to successfully bring under control.

Just before 11:00pm last night, fire crews from all three fire stations responded to a reported structure fire at 560 Main Street East.

Fire crews were on scene within 4 minutes.  Upon arrival, firefighters were met with pressurized heavy brown smoke emanating from the second-floor windows, soffit, and masonry chimney of a two-and-a-half story wood framed house.  The home was vacant at the time and under renovation. Saunders says basement fires are one of the most dangerous fire incidents that firefighters are forced to face.

Saunders reports the temperature last night made managing the incident very difficult for the firefighters who worked through the heat and successfully managed a very dangerous incident.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is under investigation this morning by fire prevention personnel, although the preliminary damage estimate is $80,000.

No injuries resulted from last night’s call, adds Saunders. “North Bay Fire would like to thank our local paramedics for staying on scene to monitor the condition of our personnel.”
