Vanthof says people should be concerned over the Tories’ Throne Speech

John Vanthof, the MPP for Timiskaming-Cochrane, says there’s very little to like about the P.C government’s Speech from the Throne and adds people should not only be worried about what it says but what’s also missing.

The New Democrat says what’s missing from the blueprint on how the government will govern over the next four years is any reference to Northern Ontario.

“There’s also no mention of Francophones or Indigenous people,” he said.

Vanthof is wondering if this means now that the election is over, will the new Tory government forget about these groups of people and the north.

Vanthof is also the NDP’s finance critic and on financial matters he sees the Tories will be quick to cancel the previous government’s cap and trade program.

It’s an election promise Premier Doug Ford made during the campaign.

However Vanthof says in their rush to axe the program, the Tories have created a series of damaging consequences.

He says tied to cap and trade were school window programs and $100 million for school repairs, but with the end of cap and trade, Vanthof adds those programs won’t see the light of day.

Vanthof says the general public should also be concerned because Ford campaigned on achieving efficiencies.

The problem he says with that strategy is, efficiencies is another way of saying cutting services.

There is one section of the Throne Speech Vanthof likes.

He’s pleased the Tories will stand with the federal government with NAFTA as Canada tries to negotiate a new trade deal with the Americans.
