Forest fires in Ontario surpass 10-year average

It’s been a very destructive fire season in Ontario with fires consuming 116,000 hectares of forest to date.

That surpasses the 10-year average up to this time of 99,000 hectares.

The number of fires is also well above the 10-year average.

To date there have been 670 forest fires compared to the average of 422.

Many of the fires have taken place in Northeastern Ontario.

As of Monday night in the northeast, there were 55 forest fires and 24 remain out of control.

Three fires make up the River Valley cluster which remains a priority area.

More firefighters from British Columbia arrived Monday afternoon and they’re trying to extinguish North Bay 62 in this cluster.

The fires in the Lady Evelyn and Temagami clusters are also priorities.

What’s been challenging for firefighters in Temagami is the North Bay 55 fire which is by a rocky terrain.

However the Ministry of Natural Resources expects to have many of the fires in the Temagami cluster extinguished in the days ahead.

Meanwhile crews from several provinces are tackling the fires in the Lady Evelyn cluster on the ground and they’re getting air support from heavy helicopters.

The camp access roads the MNRF closed last week because of their proximity to the fires remain closed.

Those include the routes north of River Valley.
