Smoke from forest fires dissipates by Friday in North Bay, West Nipissing and Callander

A combination of the forest fires in the northeast plus two new fires in Britt and Alban sent smoke toward, West Nipissing, North Bay and Callander Thursday evening.

That’s according to West Nipissing Fire Chief Richard Maranda.

However by Friday, the smoke had dissipated in all areas.

The number of fires remained at 66.

Although firefighters were able to put out 19 fires on Thursday, another 19 started in various areas of the northeast.

Of the 66 fires, 32 are still out of control.

Firefighters continue to put out flames in the Temagami cluster and continue to fight two major fires in the River Valley cluster

Meanwhile Maranda also has a caution for ATV users.

He says the exhaust from their vehicles can cause the tall grass to ignite because of the dry conditions.

The Fire Chief is asking ATV riders to be careful.
