Victim in plane crash near Lake Talon named

Officials have released the name of the man who died in a plane crash in Rutherglen Township yesterday morning.

The only person aboard the Quad City Challenger II ultralight aircraft was the operator, 57-year-old Michael MacNeil of Ottawa, Ontario. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to the OPP, the aircraft went down into the bush area approximately 100 metres from Lake Talon in Rutherglen Township.

The crash site had been engulfed in flames and cottagers reacted quickly to the situation. Approximately 20 to 25 people immediately attempted to put out the flames. They began forwarding buckets and coolers full of water in a chain to the crash site and with the assistance of the Bonfield Fire Department, the fire was held under control.

First responders, including volunteer firefighters, paramedics and police attended the scene of the crash.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
