Conditions improving but air pollution lingers

Conditions may improve over the next day or two due to the showers but smoke continues to cause poor air quality and reduce visibility.

Environment Canada and the Province of Ontario have continued a special air quality statement for North Bay, Powassan, Mattawa, West Nipissing and French River.

Environment Canada is warning of possible high levels of air pollution due to smoke from forest fires. Smoke plumes are over parts of the region from forest fires in the vicinity of Key River. Air quality may deteriorate if the smoke descends to ground level.

The special air quality statement reads individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.
