Forest Fire Update: Progress on Parry Sound 33

An update on the forest fire situation in the Northeast Region of Ontario.

As of Tuesday evening, there were 43 active forest fires across the northeast. Of these, 14 are not yet under control, 29 are either being held, under control or being observed.

In the Lady Evelyn Fire Cluster, North Bay 72 is currently mapped at approximately 27,285 hectares and has not grown in size in the last two weeks. This fire is now listed as being held, which means that given current resource levels, this fire is not expected to spread under current and forecasted weather conditions. Crews have started removing values protection that had been put in place to protect structures. Existing travel restrictions continue to be assessed but remain in place at this time.

As far as Parry Sound 33, some progress as crews are working the perimeter and containment around the fire is almost complete. The total perimeter measures almost 120 kilometres. No new growth on Parry Sound 33 yesterday and the fire is still listed at 11,362 hectares.

There are 275 firefighters and support staff currently working on this incident. That number will continue to fluctuate as staff complete their 14-day assignments and more staff become available after days of rest.

The evacuation order issued by the Municipality of Killarney for residents in the areas of Travers, Allen, Struthers, Kilpatrick, Bigwood (including Hartley Bay Road), a portion of Mowat, the Unsurveyed Area, 14 Mile Island and French River Provincial Park still remains in effect.
