Interest picking up for International Plowing Match in West Nipissing

The International Plowing Match and Rural Expo is about one year away from taking place in Verner and the committee in West Nipissing hosting the agricultural event is busy trying to ensure the event is memorable.

Neil Fox, who heads the West Nipissing committee, says 43 volunteers were in Chatham Kent in September looking to see how it hosted its IPM and what would work next year in Verner.

The committee was in Walton the year before again picking up tips shortly after West Nipissing was awarded the 2019 IPM and Rural Expo.

Fox says the West Nipissing sub-committees shadowed their Chatham Kent counterparts to gather information for next year’s event.

The West Nipissing group also had a pavilion setup to promote Verner as next year’s IPM site.

“We sold 300 RV sites while we were there,” Fox said adding West Nipissing has 1,100 RV sites available with the ability expand if necessary.

Fox says the people who have booked RV space are both visitors, participants and exhibitors.

What Fox noticed is how loyal a following the IPM has.

“You have people who have been doing this for years,” he said.

“They came into our pavilion and said things like I’ve been going to the plowing match for 37 years and these are our neighbours and we always buy sites beside each other.”

Fox says the IPM office in West Nipissing has been getting numerous inquiries from people asking about hotel, campground and cottage accommodations along the North Bay to Sudbury corridor.

Fox says the hotel rooms in Sturgeon Falls are almost already booked at capacity for next September and adds it won’t be long before the bookings extend beyond the community.
